We held the boys’ party in a park so that kids and adults would have room to roam and play. We also tied a balloon around the back belt loop of Holden’s jeans. We served coffee and water for thirsty Mamas and Papas, and we marked the entry to the party with red, helium-filled balloons drawn with the terrifying face from level 3 of the game. We served edamame in a flower pot, sunflower seeds, popcorn, and red fruit punch cooled off by a giant, icy brain. Then Ellie said, “We could put some kind of house facade at the end,” and I said, “OH MY GOODNESS, WE HAVE A LEFTOVER GINGERBREAD HOUSE KIT.” And so it was. I knew I wanted to us the “grass” tip on my cake decorating kit to make the patchwork lawn from the game, and we found PvZ figurines on Amazon. We had to resort to threats to make the kids take them off.įor the cake, we brainstormed. We cut elastic and threaded it through holes on the corners of the cones and tried them on the children. I toyed with different ways of doing it, and in a stroke of brilliance, I raided the Unused Sports Crap section of my garage for orange sports cones. I thought it would be awesome if we could make the party hats look like those traffic cones. It makes him adorable and more difficult to kill. PvZ features a zombie who wears an orange traffic cone on his head for protection. The games, “goody bags,” party hats and decorations were a breeze. Invitations were easily the most difficult and time consuming part of the party. The final result was a pretty epic party invitation, if I do say so.īefore I cleaned everything, I used the same method to quickly throw together matching thank you notes. I used the same tracing process to create the detailed information for the back of the invite, and we tore and singed those as well, gluing them to the other side of the green “lawn” cardstock. Finally, we glued the singed notes to larger pieces of green cardstock. We then tore them out to make the edges rough (and flammable), and we used leftover Christmas candles to singe the edges. I printed off the note and traced it onto another piece of paper using a fine point Sharpie and moving the note as necessary to spell out “birthday” in place of “pool.” I scanned the final note and created a simple document with four images of the note and printed it on basic, cream-colored cardstock.
The Zombies left a clever party invitation in their game. One of those notes made a nearly perfect party invitation, requiring just a couple of word substitutions. When playing PvZ, the zombies leave notes between levels indicating they’re about to launch a massive attack. So we put our heads together, had a couple of workdays, and pulled off one amazing birthday party for our boys.įirst, we made the invitations. Now I’m relatively certain that there are pre-made party supplies out there for this theme, but Ellie and I are both fans of DIY and frugality. At play dates, they run around gleefully yelling brains at each other. Her son, G, also has a December birthday.īoth boys are wild fans of Plants vs. This year, my friend Ellie and I decided to divide labor and celebrate both our boys together. Having a December birthday, we usually celebrate in January.
